What does it mean to thrive?

*There is a difference between the absence of illness and the experience of being well. My job is to guide clients toward achieving their potential for greater health, balance and joy. It takes many forms and there is no one right way. As Prema Chodron says “Start where you are”.

“All of life is important and arises from the sacred elements. The highest practice is the one that is most effective. So which practice should you do? The one that seems appropriate in the moment. The one that you’ve connected with, understood, practiced, applied. If you cannot resolve everything with one practice, then use other practices. Experiment until you know how to work with them and know how they affect you, and realize the longer you work with any practice the more profound its effects will be.  Learn what works and what you need. The spiritual path isn’t a passive journey; you don’t just follow what someone says. You have to investigate, inquire, experiment. You have to invest yourself, your time and your life in the path. Then you will find that the path reveals itself to you. You can follow it, but in following it you must also discover it.”  Tenzin Wangyal rinposche

Eating well nourishes your entire life. It’s not normal to have energy dips in the afternoon and brain fog in the morning. Wake up energized and ready to leap into the day! Life is to good to go through half awake. Increase mental alertness, shed excess pounds, eat delicious foods…learn through a cleanse or other means but start where you are. Now is the time.

If a habit is working for you stick with it. Learn to discard habits that no longer serve you well by slowly adding nourishing habits.  It doesn’t have to feel like a duel between right and wrong but rather an embracing of something new and exciting. Everything changes all of the time…including our cells. Create healthy ones as best you can.

Discover your full breath

If you exercise regularly it may seem obvious that you’re breathing is expansive and optimal. Studies show that most people use approximately 10% of their lung capacity. Startling isn’t it? While regular exercise temporarily increases this  number it doesn’t address the continuity of optimal breathing when at rest. Yogic breathing does. As we practice various yogic breathing techniques we expand our intercostal muscles, strengthen and stretch deep diaphragmatic musculature, and literally change our involuntary breathing patterns.
This is a big deal for reducing our risk of disease as well as looking and feeling brighter. Deep breathing techniques nourishes our internal organs, fat stores carrying toxins are released through the exhale and a chain reaction of hormones flood our system  protecting us from disease. Significant endorphin release is a pleasurable bonus. Symptoms of depression, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia and other chronic diseases can all be diminished through a consistent breathing practice. Athletes benefit significantly from pranayama techniques as they save much needed energy stores through more efficient use of breath. Feel better, look better, lose fat by practicing pranayama on a regular basis. It’s a win- win situation :)

An advanced 500 hour yoga teacher & massage therapist, Kai uses effective techniques to help you breath optimally. Below is a list of some common pranayama techniques that she teaches in classes and private sessions:

The Breathing (Pranayama) Techniques

  1. 3-part Breath (Dirgha): foundational breathing, relaxing, energizing and balancing
  2. Ujjay (ocean sounding breath): basic breath to create stillness in the mind, create heat in throat, oxygenates the blood, calms nervous system
  3. Kumbhaka (breath retentions): inspiratory & expiratory muscle training
  4. Agni Sara (Fire Wash): creates internal heat to activate digestive fire stimulation digestion and the removal of toxins, removes excess fat from around abdomen
  5. Kapalabhati (cleansing breath): cleanses sinuses and nasal passages, increases abdominal awareness, clears frontal lobes of brain
  6. Bhastrika (bellows breath): oxygenates the blood, increases circulation, alertness, creates heat in body to remove inflammation & toxins
  7. Nadi Shodhana (alternate nostril breathing): balances left/right hemispheres of brain, balances nervous system
  8. Anuloma Viloma (alternate nostril breathing with retention):  calms the mind and nervous system, creates introversion, shifts thought patterns from negative to positive

Kai offers private yoga sessions for $80 an hour.
