We can all agree that the world has become increasingly overwhelming due to the rapid increase in digital technology, especially over the past few decades. It is harder than ever to stop and relax due to the constant fear of missing out in this fast-pacedworld. With the world  evolving and becoming more digital than ever before, eople today spend 13+ hours on their devices, causing stress, anxiety, and ultimately leading to digital overwhelm.

It would be wrong to say that digital innovation has not also helped us; today, we can do so many things that we couldn’t have imagined a decade ago, but at what cost? Our cellphones, smart TVs and laptops help us do our work and keep us entertained for hours. However, almost everyone faces digital overwhelm as people today are forced to process large amounts of information. P, especially between work and leisure with a never ending feeds. Nina Hersher is a leading expert in Digital Wellness. Nina holds a special MSW from Washington University in Digital Culture and Program Development whichhas allowed her to study not only how people frequently  face digital overwhelm, but advise them on how to deal with it through research-based interventions.

An Easy Guide to Overcoming Digital Overwhelm

Nina shares these four helpful habits that have helped people overcome digital overwhelm and feel more relaxed.

Set Boundaries

It is always recommended to draw boundaries. The idea of balance is thousands of years old. With some much information and entertainment present on the internet today, one needs to draw clear boundaries to lead a healthy life. For most people, switching off their devices completely can be difficult; however, by healthy boundaries like checking social feeds on breaks or after work, , they can keep a check on their digital overwhelmwithout being completely consumed by it.

Take an Unplugged Day or Afternoon

Everyone needs to take a day off from digital content consumption now and then. This is highly recommended as research shows boredom can help boost imagination, and creativity. Adventuring outside if the digital world might looks like planning a picnic, reading a book, riding a bicycle, or journaling after a hot bath.

Establish  Priorities

Take time to decide what’s more important to you in life. Avoid checking your phone first thing in the morning; instead, do some light exercise, have some unplugged cofee,  and reflect on your intentions for your day. This will calm you for the day ahead and prevent the fight or flight response that often results from watching violent news immediately after waking.

Reduce Multitasking

While the digital world seemingly allows us to multitask with ease , in reality we’re more distracted than ever before. The constant switching between leisure and work apps often only leads to more stress.

Digital overwhelm has become a common thing in today’s world. However, with the right training and guidance, you can drastically   improve your mental health and digital well-being. Get in touch with Nina Hersher today to start your digital well-being journey.
